The UN Must Not Remain Silent on Terrorism Sponsorship in the Sahel
Published: May 25, 2025
Geneva, Switzerland – In a powerful statement that underscores the urgency of the crisis in the Sahel, Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, Minister of Communication for Burkina Faso, declared:
"The UN can no longer remain silent in the face of the sponsorship of terrorism in the Sahel."
The Ongoing Crisis in the Sahel
The Sahel region has faced escalating violence due to armed extremist groups. Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger are among the most affected, with thousands displaced and frequent attacks targeting civilians, soldiers, and aid workers.
Ouédraogo's remarks highlight frustrations among Sahelian leaders regarding what they perceive as insufficient action or condemnation by international institutions like the United Nations.
Call for International Action
The statement was made during an international forum on counterterrorism, where Ouédraogo urged for greater transparency, accountability, and support in dismantling networks that fund and equip extremist organizations operating in West Africa.
The UN peacekeeping mission in Mali (MINUSMA) has been under review, and several African nations have called for reform in how global powers address terrorism threats on the continent.
